Today was a warm day. In fact, this whole week has been warm, averaging about 2’C. Thinking about it, that’s actually pretty sad that we Canadians are calling it ‘nice’ weather when in comparison to summer or real spring weather, it’s quite ‘cold’. Well, I’m not complaining. I’m happy that the snow is melting and I can chuck my big winter jacket to the back of my closet. No more bulkiness, yay! This weather is actually perfect for layering a variety of textures without feeling too cold or too hot.
When my houndstooth skirt first came in the mail, I thought I was going to struggle to create outfits with it. The way I see this print is: business casual, chic, and bold. How was I going to incorporate this into casual wear for all seasons? However, with the sun staying out longer, and the sunlight resting on my skin, there’s just so much more inspiration! I have so many outfits in mind with this houndstooth skirt, that I’m going to try my best to hold back on it so my whole blog and Instagram feed isn’t totally all about the pattern.
Styling the Houndstooth Skirt
Let’s start off with the obvious: the skirt is black and white. What does that mean? It matches with everything, duh! There are tons of options for how to style this skirt. Today, the weather was 2’C, but felt like -3’C, so let’s start off there. The slight chill calls for layers- not just any laters, but thick layers. However, because it’s measured in the positives, it’s also forgiving, meaning I can skip the opaque tights for this outfit.
I paired the houndstooth skirt with 20den stockings and thigh high socks to keep my legs warm because it’s not fully spring yet (it’s a tease). I then knew I wanted to make this outfit casual but edgy. I knew I needed to have the faux leather jacket on. Now here’s the fun part: what to wear under the jacket? I have a couple of things in mind. If I wanted it more classy chic, I would’ve went with a chic statement necklace and clean cut white top like in my ‘1 dress 3 ways’ video. I also could have opted for a ‘coffee date’ look by zipping up the jacket completely and throwing a coloured infinity scarf on, but decided against it because I wasn’t feeling for a sock bun. So in the end, I paired the houndstooth skirt with a chunky turtleneck sweater for a casual study day outfit. To finish the outfit off, I layered a chiffon blouse under just to break up the salt & pepper texture from the houndstooth.
