I’ve never been into a real corn maze until now and it was definitely overwhelming. When I was told I’d be going to a corn maze in Lubbock, Texas, I thought it’d be super small like the straw mazes made out of hay that Canadian Tire used to host for children. However, this corn maze was a whole other thing. When you first enter, you see a map of the maze and it gives you an idea of how the maze is structured. Apparently it changes every year. When I had some time to actually look at the map, there were so many different turns and dead ends, I knew this was going to be a real corn maze.
The corn maze had thick walls made out of corn that even an average size person couldn’t peer above of (I say that because I’m short, haha). One could definitely hide in the walls and scare people easily. It wasn’t too much of a concern of spook-factor until the sun started going down and it got dark. At that point, you can see a lot of shadows and your mind can start hallucinating. I’m someone who’s afraid of the dark, so it doesn’t work out too well for me. Luckily I had my boyfriend with me. Otherwise, you can bet I’d be freaking out in the middle of the corn maze.
If you don’t pay attention to where you’re going, it’s really easy to get lost. I mean that in a way where if you enter without looking or following a map. We did that at one point to see if we’d be able to get out from being lost, and ran into many dead ends. It definitely posed a challenge. For me being directionally challenged, I probably wouldn’t have made it out myself. I can imagine myself walking back and forth in a circle without realizing.
I have to say though, this whole experience was tons of fun. I really enjoy outdoor activities and hiking. Even though the sun setting as very spook-inducing, the views were amazing and beautiful. There were a few “bridges” in the middle of the field you could climb on and oversee part of the maze. Watching the colours of the sky change was stunning.
Though, if any of you do decide to go to a corn maze at night, wear more layers because I didn’t wear many and I got eaten alive by mosquitos.
